At Sundial Nursery, we want to increase the functional natural habitat in an effort to promote native biodiversity and conserve our beloved plants and animals. Our landscapes have the wonderful opportunity to be a home for birds, insects and other important critters. We are pushing for a beautifully designed and native plant-focused approach to horticulture. If our social and residential landscapes can look spectacular while providing native habitat, we should make it that way!

“The typical suburban landscape is a highly simplified community consisting of a few species of alien ornamental plants that provide neither food nor shelter for animals. Our challenge is to redesign our living spaces in ways that provide both”

Douglas W. Tallamy, author of Bringing Nature Home

Emilee and Sam

Emilee is a 2025 graduate in Horticulture and Garden design. During school, she landscaped on the coast of Maine and provided garden design services. For university breaks, she spent her time learning organic vegetable farming practices while WWOOFing. After graduation, Emilee worked on a human-scale high-output farm providing organic vegetables to CSA members. She was steeped in Maine’s natural beauty growing up and has a deep appreciation for the complex natural systems of our local ecosystem.

Sam’s background in Microbiology gives him a keen lens into the world of soil health as it relates to soil microbial populations and the soil food web, the foundation of any healthy ecosystem! Since he was a young child he has been a naturalist at heart, having a passion and deep love for the outdoors. He has fond memories of exploring the deserts of Nevada as a child looking at interesting plants, learning how to crack open a pecan with his hands, or collecting eastern white cedar seeds to spread around his local forests when he moved to Maine. An avid observer of the natural world and hobbyist gardener, Sam is eager to open Sundial Nursery alongside Emilee where he can further pursue his passion for native plants and caring for the living world.
